Webinar on demand -Sensory Gardens for Schools

Join Open Canopy, for a practical 30-minute webinar exploring how sensory gardens can support neurodivergent students, emotional regulation, outdoor learning and wellbeing.

We’ll look at how thoughtful outdoor spaces can provide:

  •  sensory choice

  • calm and retreat spaces

  • inclusive outdoor learning opportunities

  • planting that supports texture, scent, sound and seasonal change

  • shade, enclosure and accessibility

  •  simple design moves schools can apply to create more inclusive environments

This session is designed for school principals, wellbeing leaders, inclusion coordinators, educators, architects and anyone interested in creating school grounds where every student can feel calmer, more connected and more able to belong.

A sensory garden is more than a planted space. It can become part of a school’s wellbeing strategy.

Join Open Canopy for a practical 30-minute webinar exploring how thoughtful planting can create nature play spaces that are engaging, inclusive, resilient and successful over the long term.

This session will cover key planting principles, including preserving existing vegetation, selecting child-friendly and high play value plants, using planting as an active design element in nature play, and choosing species that respond to local site conditions, climate and maintenance requirements.

We’ll explore how planting can provide:

  • Shade and thermal comfort

  • Enclosure and retreat spaces

  • Identity and sense of place

  • Movement, discovery and imaginative play opportunities

  • Natural play props and loose parts

  • Sensory experiences through texture, colour, scent and sound

  • Accessibility and inclusive play experiences

  • Landmarks and wayfinding

  • Seasonal change, novelty and learning opportunities

  • Habitat creation and wildlife enhancement

Through practical examples and design insights, we’ll discuss how planting can move beyond aesthetics to become an essential component of successful nature-based play environments that support wellbeing, connection and exploration.
